A correctly glued dowel joint is generally the stronger, longer-lasting choice for a frame that gets sat on and opened every day. The glue bonds two pieces of wood into one continuous load path. A screw-fixed corner bracket is faster and cheaper to assemble, and easy to retighten at home — but it relies on a metal thread gripping wood fibre, a grip that tends to loosen as the wood expands and contracts through the seasons. Quality varies enormously within both methods, so how well each one is executed matters more than which name appears in the product description.
What is the difference between a glued dowel joint and a screw bracket joint?
A storage ottoman frame is built from rails and legs meeting at right angles. Every one of those corners has to resist being pulled apart, twisted, and racked every time someone sits down or lifts the lid.
A glued dowel joint solves this by drilling matching holes into both pieces of wood, coating the holes and a cylindrical wood dowel with adhesive, and pressing the joint together. Once the glue cures, the two pieces of timber are effectively bonded into one continuous structure across a wide surface area.
A screw bracket joint takes a different approach. A separate bracket — usually a small metal angle plate, sometimes a triangular wood block — sits inside the corner and is screwed into the inside face of both the rail and the leg. Nothing bonds the rail to the leg directly; the bracket holds them together mechanically, with the screw threads providing the grip.
It is a much faster method to manufacture, since there is no glue to mix, apply, or wait for. It is the standard approach in most flat-pack and self-assembly ottomans, where the frame has to come apart for shipping and be rebuilt by the customer.
Which joint holds up better under daily use?
On balance, a well-made glued dowel joint outperforms a screw bracket joint for sustained structural load. It resists pulling-apart and racking forces across the entire glued surface rather than at one small fastening point.
In independent load-to-failure testing published by Canadian Woodworking magazine, a glued dowel joint in solid oak held to roughly 650 lb (around 295 kg) of applied force before failing — slightly ahead of a mortise-and-tenon joint in the same test, and well clear of a biscuit joint. Separate peer-reviewed research published in Wood and Fiber Science found that corner joints combining a mechanical fastener with dowels resisted bending forces significantly better than the same fastener used alone — evidence that the dowel element, not the fastener, does most of the structural work.
That does not make every screw bracket joint weak. A bracket fixed with several correctly sized screws into solid timber, with a snug, glued-and-clamped fit at the corner, can hold a respectable load. The bigger issue is not peak strength on day one — it is what happens after years of use.

Why do screw bracket joints loosen — and can a dowel joint fail too?
Both joints can fail, but they tend to fail in different ways.
A screw’s grip depends on its threads biting into a fixed zone of wood fibre — and that fibre is not static. UK homes swing between centrally heated winters that dry the air and humid summers, and timber absorbs and releases moisture in response to both. Each cycle slightly enlarges the channel the screw sits in, and after enough cycles the thread loses its bite. This is one of the most commonly cited causes of furniture wobble in independent repair guides, which routinely recommend retightening bracket screws as a first response.
A glued dowel joint is not immune to failure, but the mechanism is different. Because it depends on a cured adhesive bond rather than ongoing mechanical friction, it does not loosen gradually the way a screw does. When a dowel joint fails, it is usually down to how it was made — some factory production lines apply too little glue to fully coat the dowel and the hole, leaving the bond reliant on only the very tip of the dowel. A joint built that way can fail outright along the glue line, rather than slowly working loose like a bracket.
Which construction should you look for when buying a UK storage ottoman?
There is no single universally correct answer — it depends on how hard the piece will work and what you can verify before you buy.

- For occasional use — a screw bracket frame is not automatically a poor choice. It is the standard, sensible method for flat-pack pieces, and it has one genuine advantage: if a corner starts to creak, you can usually fix it yourself with a screwdriver rather than disassembling and regluing a joint.
- Ask the retailer directly which joining method is used at the structural corners. “Solid wood frame” describes the timber, not the joinery, and does not tell you which method holds it together.
- Check bracket access. Some ottomans have a removable base panel that lets you retighten screws years down the line; others seal the frame inside the upholstery completely, which removes that advantage.
